Geocache container and my backpack outside of Akureyri, Iceland.

Over a decade ago, my mom and I started geocaching. We would take walks in Colorado and find these hidden objects using a handheld GPS unit. This was in the days before we had smartphones.

You go to www.geocaching.com, create an account, and suddenly a whole new world is opened up. All of these hidden objects in your neighborhood, places you walk by everyday. They can be as big as ammo containers, or as small as the tip of my pinky finger. Or even just a piece of information on a landmark, informational sign, or placard.

In the past decade or so, my family has found more than 1,000 geocaches in many countries and states. From Hawaii to Iceland, from Russia and Greece to the tops of mountains, and within sight of the U.S. Capitol building.

After find 1,111 in Hawaii.
